Garden furniture. Decisions, decisions. . .

 My Son and I don’t go out in the garden much. I really want to make the most of the good weather approaching, so I think lunch in the garden at weekends will be nice to start off with, and as the weather improves we can have tea in the garden in the evenings. 

Friends have just bought a really lovely bistro set. I love it, but need something robust. (My Son is autistic and amongst the many things that I have to be mindful of, is the fact that he doesn’t just sit normally as we do. He kind of drops. All his weight goes down in one go and without any consideration for what he is sitting on - he just doesn’t understand. Sofas have had to be reinforced, his previous bed was reinforced too.) But I want something nice. I don’t want metal chairs. I am thinking that you get what you pay for, so I’m having to raise our budget. I can’t afford to do this twice and my Nan used to say “don’t throw good money after bad”.

So, I have been looking online at bistro sets. Due to covid and brexit there are huge delays on items being imported. I can’t find a sturdy bistro set within our budget that is made in the UK. I need to get my finger out pdq! This is the one I have got in mind ...

I want something that is comfy for eating a meal at but also just for sitting and reading /crocheting / sewing etc. I can’t get to a garden centre to have a look around until next week when we will have a carer. (My Son can’t cope with going out at the moment, everything is too overwhelming for him and he has meltdowns. It isn’t pretty either, as he is 25 and 6’2”. Good old autism and anxiety)

I’m not keen on the cushions, but I can make new covers, so that isn’t a big issue, and I have already seen some canvas type fabric that I like. We have got a lovely gazebo that can go up and I think an outdoor rug would be nice too, so it just looks like another room. Hopefully my Son will accept that and won’t feel anxious out there. I already have some solar lights that will look fab hanging from the gazebo too. 

What garden furniture have you got / can recommend / wouldn’t recommend ?

Let's hear it for H&M My Son cannot go shopping. He can't cope with shops, people, the lighting (in some shops), all the noises . . . sensory overload. I have been buying his clothes from H&M for several years now, 25 to be precise. Even when he was a baby he wore H&M clothes. They're great quality, lots of colour choices and I can often find something a bit quirky. The customer service is always very good at our local High Street store too. Yesterday's haul is fab. I bought him some pastel coloured shorts and tops including the pale green t-shirt below 🔽 As he gradually wears his new threads, I'll try to get photos and post them here on my blog. Their T shirts always wash well and the sizing is good. My Son reallu suits light/pastel colours.  Do you have a go-to store for when you want/need to buy clothing for a boy/man? My main hobby is crocheting, but I generally try to have a go at anything I like the look of. I am about to dip into the world of dressmaking and hoping it will be a success as I'm not keen on shopping and can never seem to find something I totally like, and I end up compromising when I really don't want to.  Anyway. I have been crocheting a amigurumi greyhound. It is for a fundraiser for Greyhound Gap, which is a Greyhound rescue based in Staffordshire, UK. All the small stitches have made my hands and fingers ache, so I have taken a small break and tried my hand at origami this week.  I found a couple of simple tutorials on youtube and made a heart, a flower, and a crane. Been so busy . . .

I fully intended to regularly contribute to this blog, but  anyway I'm here now.  My Son is autistic/epileptic/non-verbal, can't read, write or sign. He has had such an awful time due to the lockdowns. No day centre, no carers, just stuck with me 24/7. Now he is having a terrible time adjusting to the new "normal". Not going to lie. Life for us both has been hellish. We're just getting some things in place to support him, so hopefully he will feel brighter soon. The garden furniture did not go as planned. I took the common sense route and ordered furniture that is more robust. Not what I wanted, but at least this set will withstand my Son's autistic outbursts. I still haven't put it together as it is still a bit chilly out, even in the sunshine. Although I'm not a really hot weather lover, I still think 13°c is far too cold to eat in the garden.  I also bought us a Tandoor. Yes. A Tandoor.
